A BIBLICAL STUDY ON MARRIAGE, DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE
MARRIAGE:
1. By whom and where was the first marriage established?
A/ In Eden at the time of creation. God established it. Gen.1:27-28
2. Who officiated the first wedding?
R/ God himself. Gen.2:18-22.
3. What is God's law on marriage?
R/ Marriage is an indissoluble institution until the death of the spouses. What God joins together man cannot separate, that includes judges, courts and all man-made laws. Gen. 2:24; Matt. 19:5-6.
4. According to the New Testament, until when should the marriage relationship between two people be in force?
R/ Until the death of the spouses. Rom.7:2 p.p.; 1Cor.7:39p.p.
5. What union is marriage a symbol of?
R/ Of Christ's relationship with his church. Eph.5:22-27.
6. Is marriage a contract or a covenant?
R/ It is a covenant until the death of the spouses. Malachi 2:14 Mark 10:9; Romans 7:2-3;
1 Corinthians 7:39; Galatians 3:15; Proverbs 2:17.
DIVORCE:
7. When, where and by whom does divorce originate?
R/ Divorce originated in the pagan peoples of ancient Mesopotamia. That and other practices such as polygamy were practiced by the Israelites because of their rebellion and hardness of heart. Eze.20:24-25; Matt.19:7-8.
8. Does God like divorce, does He approve of it?
A/ No. God hates divorce. Mal.2:15-16.
9. What can no human being do according to God's command?
R/ To separate or divorce those whom God has joined in marriage. Matt.19:6.
10. In what case should there be a separation between spouses?
R/ In case of fornication. Fornication, ( Gr.πορνεία) biblically has several meanings:
a) Sexual intercourse as unmarried
b) Immorality
c) Spiritual idolatry
d) Invalid unions (incest, bigamy, same-sex marriages, polygamy, concubinage, unions of persons with their living spouse).
Throughout the Bible, in every text with words that have several meanings, the one that best fits the immediate context and does not contradict the rest of the verses on the same subject is used. It is a perversion of biblical hermeneutics to use the one that the reader or translator comes up with. In this case the only option that corresponds to "fornication" in Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 is # d, that is, invalid or illicit unions. (Leviticus 18:6-18)
11. According to question # 10, are the current versions of the Bible correct when translating Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 as sexual immorality, adultery, marital unfaithfulness?
R/ They are totally incorrect and were introduced to support divorce.
12. What would be the correct translation?
R/ The exact translation of the original expression is "but in case of fornication". If one wanted to make a translation that explains the context in which Jesus said that expression the best version is God Speaks Today:
"I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except in the case of unlawful union, and marries another, commits adultery" (Matthew 19:9 DHH).
REMARRIAGE:
13. when can a person remarry?
R/ In case his spouse has died. Rom.7:2; 1Cor.7:39.
14. If someone remarries while their spouse is living, how does God consider that?
R/ Adultery. Matt.5:32; Matt.19:9; Luke 16:18; Mark 10:11-12; Rom.7:3.
15. Can adulterers enter the kingdom of heaven?
R/ No. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.
16. Is it God's will for legitimate couples to separate or divorce? If so, what should they do?
R/ It is not right, it is disobedience or sin. 1Cor.7:10-11.
They should remain unmarried or be reconciled to their legitimate spouse.
17. Does God authorize remarriage?
A/ No, nowhere in the Bible. Jesus said 7 times that whoever remarries while married commits adultery and causes his new spouse to commit adultery. Luke 16:18; Mark 10:11; Matthew 5:32; Matthew 19:9. It is also expressly forbidden by the apostle Paul. Romans 7:1-3.
18. Does 1 Corinthians 7:10-16 authorize divorce and remarriage?
R/ No. It only says that if an unbelieving spouse wants to divorce, the believer should not prevent him/her from doing so and thus preserve peace. In verses 10 and 11, Paul makes it clear that if separation occurs, the believer should remain unmarried.
